Fire destroys Columbus home as seven people escape day after Christmas

A fire Wednesday morning destroyed a Castlewood subdivision house as the seven occupants escaped without injuries, said Columbus Fire Marshal Ricky Shores.

Unfortunately, the family's pets didn't have the same safe ending.

"We have unconfirmed reports that they perished, a couple of dogs," Shores said.

At 4:21 a.m., seven units responded to the fire at 3 Wexton Court, Shores said. The fire was contained in 20 minutes, but the house is a total loss, he said.

"It would take a tremendous amount of work to repair the home," he said.

The estimated damage is $200,000 to the structure and $150,000 to the contents, including four vehicles. The fire consumed two of the vehicles in the garage, where the fire seems to have started, Shores said. The cause hasn't been determined and still is under investigation, he said.

The home's occupants included the two owners, two children and visiting relatives, Shores said. They all were sleeping when the fire started, and one of the residents awoke from smelling smoke and alerted the rest, he said.
