What's your advice for people who have already given up on a resolution to exercise more this year?
I understand how frustrating it may be to go to the gym and have a really good workout, rush home and jump on the scale because you just know that you have dropped at least 10 pounds since you are dripping in sweat. Then you are disappointed to see that not only did you not lose weight, but it appears that you put on a pound! A few more episodes like this and then you quit -- resolution dead.
I tell my students not to give up on me or on their fitness goals. Be patient. You are not on "The Biggest Loser" and not everyone has 10 pounds to drop every two weeks. If you do as your trainer tells you, you can lose up to 1 to 2 pounds per week. Dropping weight slowly gives you a better chance of keeping it off. It takes up to four weeks to see your body changing, eight weeks for your friends to notice, and 12 weeks for the rest of the world to notice. So don't quit!
Until health becomes a lifestyle, you might need to work out with a friend to stay accountable. Find an exercise class that you can be excited about. At Infinity, we have so many options available for every fitness level.
What are some of the most common misconceptions about diets and/or exercise?
People think if they don't eat, they will lose more weight. Unfortunately, you are doing more damage by starving yourself. Your metabolism will slow down and instead of your body converting the food you eat into energy, the food is stored and you gain weight.
Skipping meals causes you to overeat later. The best thing to do is to eat small meals throughout the day. Your body will burn calories all day and you will have more energy.
The best way to jump-start a healthy lifestyle and maintain a balanced diet is to eat breakfast. I know what the next statement will be: "But I can't eat first thing in the morning." This is the most common excuse for skipping a morning meal. That is probably because you are getting the bulk of your calories later in the day and your body has gotten used to it.
To break this pattern while still maintaining a balanced diet, trim a few hundred calories from your dinner by making healthy substitutions. Try having vegetables in place of heavy carbs and fried foods, water in place of soda/sweet tea and a fruit smoothie or fruit sorbet in place of ice cream. After a few days, you will begin to have an appetite in the morning.
Your newest project, Infinity After Dark, offers a unique approach to fitness. What's been the response so far?
Infinity After Dark is our new Pole Fitness Studio. The response has been very exciting. We are offering women a way to get fit and have fun while feeling sexy. Pole Fitness is really misunderstood because when people hear the word "pole," a negative image comes to mind.
But after you take a class, you can't believe how hard you just worked. You're having fun, and soon you see yourself getting toned and stronger. Women start the class because it's fun, but stay because it brings them confidence.
Can you recommend any smartphone apps for people interested in getting in shape?
Nike Training Club is a great app for women of all fitness levels. You get tips from celebrity trainers and professional athletes.
What's the best-kept secret in the Chattahoochee Valley?
In addition to Infinity Dance & Fitness and Infinity After Dark, I'd say Slender Wrap. They have this new lay down body wrap that is an amazing way to clean out the toxins in your body and relax you.
