"Before I Die ..." wall signing kicks off this year's Artbeat

Artbeat 2013 kicks off March 14 when Columbus Mayor Teresa Tomlinson is the first to sign the "Before I Die ..." wall. The wall, an installation by artist Candy Chang of New Orleans. Chang was inspired by a writing on the wall of a house in her neighborhood after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

She builds walls and has people write what they'd like to remembered or be remembered for, as well as their dreams for themselves and their communities.

After Tomlinson writes her thoughts on the wall in front of the Bradley Theatre, 1241 Broadway, the students of the Downtown Magnet Academy and St. Luke School will write on the wall. For the next two weeks, anyone passing by can write on the wall.

Another wall will be placed in Dinglewood Park at the corner of 18th Avenue and 13th Street, across from the side parking lot of Locos Pub & Grill.

Later that day, from 4:45-6 p.m. in the parking lot of the W.C. Bradley Co., 1017 Front Ave., there will be performances by the Jordan High School Jazz Group, Kendrick High School Choral Group, and excerpt from "Rent" by the Columbus State University theater students, the River Road School STOMPers, the Youth Orchestra of Greater Columbus and live sculptures by students from Wynnton Arts Academy.

Also from 6-8 p.m., there's an opening reception of an exhibit of work by artist Sarah Kent Butler in the Bradley Co. Museum.

There are events thoughout Artbeat from March 14-31.

More to come.
