Rain has canceled a session focusing on safety for motorcycle riders today at the National Infantry Museum.
The Maneuver Center of Excellence was hosting the Motorcycle Mentorship D-day Remembrance safety ride Thursday to emphasizes safety, education of Department of the Army and post motorcycle riding policies and tips for new motorcyclists. The event was to coincide with the start of the summer riding season. A post public affairs spokeswoman said the event will be rescheduled.
Over the last three years, motorcycle traffic deaths have increased, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In 2011, 4,612 motorcyclists died in motor vehicle traffic crashes. The total is a 2 percent increase from the 4,518 motorcyclists who died in 2010. Deaths for 2012 are not available yet, but officials project the motorcycle deaths may exceed 5,000.
