Aug. 28: Hell On Air Band performs at Mix Ultra Lounge (VIDEO)

So, people pay to watch them pretend to play guitars?

Yes, and it is beautiful.

That's the CliffsNotes version of what to expect when the Hell On Air Band performs tonight (Aug. 28) at Mix Ultra Lounge, 1040 Broadway in downtown Columbus. Doors open at 8 p.m. Aerosol opens the show around 9, and the main act expects to take the stage around 10:15-10:30.

The show marks the local air band's 10-year anniversary -- well, approximately 10 years, if you watch the video below. You'll see about 10-12 band members throughout the course of the night, spanning people who have participated in various incarnations of the act.

"Bean," the act's frontman, said you can expect all the elements of a standard rock show. "For one night, we get to kind of raise hell and do whatever comes to mind," he said.

Don't be cynical about the band's reliance on karaoke tracks. They deliver a wide selection of material, use real instruments and promise to deliver a form of "rock and roll theater."

"Bean" explained, "We are all show. We have no time to practice because we're all dads and stuff." Even though they're air musicians, "we have to sing and we have to interact (with the crowd)," he added.

Check out my recent video interview with some of the air musicians you'll see at tonight's show. In the video, they explain the act's origins and compare themselves to a whale.

Somehow, the comparison works.
