Miss Georgia wins Miss America swimsuit preliminary competition

Miss Georgia Carly Mathis won Thursday's preliminary swimsuit competition for the Miss America pageant. She receives a $1,000 scholarship.

Preliminary competitions were held Tuesday through Thursday in Atlantic City. Two winners -- one in talent, one in swimsuit -- were announced each night. The Miss America pageant airs 9 p.m. Sunday on ABC.

Mathis hails from Leesburg, a small city near Albany. She was crowned Miss Georgia during a pageant held in Columbus in June.

Mathis, who has family in the Columbus area, graduated from the University of Georgia in May with a degree in digital and broadcast journalism. After she was crowned Miss Georgia, she told us she hopes to be a political or law correspondent.

Her platform issue is heart health.
