Board to vote on Reese Road charter, honor Fort's Coaxum

At the Monday meeting of the Muscogee County School Board, Fort Middle School principal Sonja Coaxum will be recognized for being one of six finalists for Georgia Secondary School Principal of the year.

The honor is given by the Georgia Association of Secondary School Principals.

The board meeting is 6 p.m. in the Muscogee County Public Education Center on Macon Road.

In other business:

The board will vote on the approval of the renewal of the Reese Road Leadership Academy Charter.

Reese Road has been a charter school for five years. It is one of three, Clubview Elementary and Wynnton Arts Academy being the others.

Charter schools are public schools given a certain degree of autonomy from rules and regulations in exchange for setting and meeting measurable goals.

There was little discussion about the renewal at a work session on Feb. 10 but board member Cathy Williams did question the school’s progress on test scores, where the school has fallen short on some of the goals it set in the original charter.

She also noted that 37 percent of Reese Road’s faculty and staff disapproved of the renewal application.

The board will also vote on revisions to board polices that will prohibit the use of an electronic cigarette, electronic vaping device, personal vaporizer, electronic nicotine delivery system or battery-powered device which stimulates tobacco smoking.

The board will vote on the recommended appointment of Andrew Mullins to the Muscogee County Library Board as a replacement for Michelle Griffin.
