Man accused of beating ex-girlfriend's new beau; holds her captive

An Opelika, Ala., man is accused of breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home Tuesday and assaulting her new boyfriend with a gun, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said.

Brandon Ramarlo Burton, 31, faces one count each of unlawful imprisonment in the first degree, burglary, theft of property third degree and assault third degree in connection with the 5:08 a.m. CDT incident in the 100 block of Lee Road 197 in Smith Station. He was taken into custody after a 45-minute standoff with deputies and held without bond in the Lee County Detention Facility.

Deputies were called to the home after a woman said her ex-boyfriend had broken into the house while she was asleep. He refused to leave and assaulted her boyfriend with a gun.

Deputies found the boyfriend with a busted lip at a nearby store. He told deputies that he was awaken and struck repeatedly in his face and head. After the assault, the boyfriend said he was forced at gunpoint to leave the house.

The man also said that Burton returned to the house and held the woman and her three children captive. Burton surrendered without incident after 45 minutes of negotiating with deputies.
