The Russell County Coroner’s Office is still waiting for autopsy results in the death of 12-year-old Christopher Allen Haywood, a Phenix City boy who died after a three-wheel motorcycle crashed June 27 on Bayview Drive.
Haywood, a passenger on the motorcycle, was pronounced dead of blunt-force trauma to the head and body after the accident. Because of the holiday weekend, Russell County Coroner Arthur Sumbry said the report probably won’t be available until early next week from the Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery, Ala.
The coroner said he doesn’t believe the boy was wearing a helmet when the throttle apparently stuck, forcing the driver and the passenger to jump from the vehicle.
“I don’t believe helmets were worn,” he said.
The driver of the motorcycle was treated for injuries at a hospital in Columbus.
The coroner said Haywood was a passenger on the motorcycle when the driver went for a test drive. Sumbry said the throttle stuck and both occupants jumped from the motorcycle.
The accident was investigated by the Phenix City Police Department but officials didn’t return calls for comment on Thursday.
