Prison escapee Avery Kirksey captured by Fugitive Squad

Muscogee County Prison escapee Avery Javon Kirksey was captured Tuesday, four days after he walked away from a work detail in east Columbus.

Kirksey, 26, was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon by the Georgia Department of Corrections Fugitive Squad.

The inmate had been on the lam since walking away from a detail on Chalbena Avenue and Teresa Street at 1:40 p.m. Friday. Four hours later, a homeowner told police that he surprised Kirksey as he was leaving his home on Schatulga Road. Dressed in khaki shorts and a white shirt, Kirksey left his white uniform with “State Prisoner” printed on the back behind the home.

Warden Dwight Hamrick said the search area was extended five miles from the prison to track Kirksey. The search included marked and unmarked vehicles, K9 units and the Fugitive Squad.

Before his escape, Kirksey of Statesboro was scheduled for release in 2021, but he now faces additional charges of escape and burglary. He was serving time for possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and obstruction of a law enforcement officer.
