An overnight house fire has killed a Columbus man.

David Sanders Jr., 54, died Friday from acute respiratory failure due to smoke inhalation from a fire in his 12th Avenue home, Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan told the Ledger-Enquirer.

The coroner’s office was notified about the fire at 12:10 a.m., Bryan said, and Sanders was pronounced dead at the scene 27 minutes later.

Sanders was the only person in the house when the fire broke out, Bryan said.

The Ledger-Enquirer didn’t reach a Columbus Fire & EMS Department official before publication to report the cause of the fire.
