A Talbotton, Ga., man has been identified as the driver in a fatal head-on collision Friday on Miller Road at Bush Avenue, Columbus police said.
The victim was identified as Robert Isaacs, said Deputy Muscogee County Coroner Charles Newton. Isaacs, 35, was pronounced dead at 7:57 p.m. at the scene of the accident. No autopsy will be conducted but a blood test will check for alcohol and any other substances.
Injured in Isaacs’ vehicle was Lori Scesny, 43. Lisa Herring, 43, of Columbus was the driver of other car. A report on their conditions at Midtown Medical Center wasn’t available Saturday afternoon.
Police said Isaacs was driving a 2008 Hyundai Sonata westbound on Miller Road and Herring was in a 2011 Kia Sorento going west when the passenger in Isaacs’ car said he made a u-turn and started traveling east in the westbound lanes at 7:25 p.m. The front of Isaacs’ car struck the front of Herring’s Sorento, causing extensive damage to both vehicles.
The posted speed limit on the four-lane road is 45 mph. Scesny and Herring were wearing seat belts but Isaacs wasn’t, police said.
Police temporarily closed the road to traffic between Pittman Street and Warm Springs Road. While the investigation was underway, some motorists gathered in the parking lot of Striplin Terrace United Methodist Church which is located across the road from the crash.
Friday’s collision was the second fatal accident since Tuesday when a homeless Columbus woman stepped from the curb on Second Avenue into the path of northbound Ford SUV. The woman was identified as Eyiloni Bonner who was struck across from the Open Door Community House.
