Hammer damages ATM in break-in attempt

Columbus police are looking for a thief who took a hammer instead of a bank card late Wednesday to an ATM machine on 10th Avenue.

No suspect was arrested in the 1700 10th Ave. attempted theft at a Columbus Bank and Trust branch.

Police were called to the automated teller machine to check on a person attempting to steal money from the bank machine. A hammer was used to strike the machine to get access to the money.

No cash was taken from the machine but police said the thief caused about $150 in damage to the equipment.

The attempt remains under investigation, police said.
