Lady Cougars split doubleheader with Lander


GREENWOOD, S.C. -- Cali Star and Taylor Turner each drove in two runs Wednesday to lead Columbus State to a 6-4 win and a split of a doubleheader at Doug Spears Field.

The Lady Cougars (13-11, 1-1 Peach Belt Conference) scored four runs in the top of the second to take control of the nightcap.

Turner (5-2) allowed three runs on five hits in three innings to get the win. Lindsey Defee finished the final four innings to pick up the save, her second of the season. Amanda Chastain allowed five runs on five hits in 1 1-3 innings and took the loss for Lander (8-10, 5-5).

In Game 1, Lander broke open a scoreless game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to defeat Columbus State 2-0.

Lindsey DeFee, Kailey Boone and Kaycee Meeks each singled for CSU, but the Cougars were limited to just three hits by Hannah Newton.

Newton (5-5) allowed three walks and struck out two to pick up the win. Reliever Kristen Carr (7-4) allowed two runs on three hits and took the loss for the Cougars.
