Five players with local ties in Major League's big show

The 2015 Major League baseball season officially got underway Sunday night with St. Louis playing at the rival Chicago Cubs.

But for the rest of Major League teams, today is Opening Day.

The Bi-City area has five players who began the season in the major leagues.

Four of them have long-time ties to the area. They are Tim Hudson, Edwin Jackson, Colby Rasmus and Cory Rasmus. Brooks Brown is a relative newcomer to the area, having moved here in 2011.

Here is a look at each one as the season begins:

TIM HUDSON

Ht./Wt.: 6-1/175

Local ties: Played at Glenwood, CVCC and Auburn

MLB team: San Francisco Giants

Pos: Pitcher

Career stats: 214-124, 3.45 ERA.

Last season: 9-13, 3.57 ERA.

Outlook for 2015: Hudson, who will turn 40 in June, is on the last year of his two-year deal with the Giants. Hudson seems to have fully recovered from offseason ankle surgery and will take his place at the backend of the Giants' starting rotation.

EDWIN JACKSON

Ht./Wt.: 6-3/210

Local ties: Played at Shaw High, pitcher/outfielder on 2001 state championship team

MLB team: Chicago Cubs

Pos: Pitcher

Career stats: 84-104, 4.63 ERA

Last season: 6-15, 6.33 ERA

Outlook for 2015: Jackson was 2-1 with a 4.96 ERA in spring training, which wasn't good enough to earn a spot in the Cubs rotation. Jackson, who finished last season in the bullpen, will start this season in the same place.

COLBY RASMUS

Ht./Wt.: 6-2/195

Local ties: Played at Russell County High, member of 2005 state championship team; also played on Phenix City Little League team that won U.S. championship.

MLB team: Houston Astros

Pos: OF

Career stats: .246, 116 HR, 352 RBI, 142 2B.

Last season: .225, 18 HR, 40 RBI, 21 2B.

Outlook for 2015: Signed a one-year contract with Astros after playing last 3-plus seasons with Blue Jays. Astros moved Rasmus to left field from center field during spring training, so that Jake Marisnick could settle in in center field. Rasmus said during offseason that he would play three more seasons then retire.

CORY RASMUS

Ht./Wt.: 6-0/200

Local ties: Played at Russell County High, member of 2005 state championship team; also played on Phenix City Little League team that won U.S. championship.

MLB team: Los Angeles Angels

Pos: P

Career stats: 4-3, 3.36

ERA.

Last season: 3-2, 2.57 ERA.

Outlook for 2015: Rasmus served as a starter the last month of the 2014 season. Rasmus appeared in only two spring training games as a reliever before undergoing surgery for a core injury in the middle of last month. He is not expected to return until late May at the earliest.

BROOKS BROWN

Ht./Wt.: 6-3/205

Local ties: Lived in Columbus since 2011

MLB team: Colorado Rockies

Pos: Pitcher

Career stats: 0-1, 2.77 ERA.

Last season: 0-1, 2.77 ERA.

Outlook for 2015: A former pitcher at Georgia who was born in Statesboro, Ga., Brown made his MLB debut last May and pitched in 28 games for the Rockies. This spring, he is 1-0 with a 1.46 ERA in 11 games. He was 2-for-2 in saves. Expected to pitch out of the bullpen.
