Columbus children’s book author, Strut the Hooch parade founder Steve Scott dies
Columbus resident Steve Scott, known for his children’s books and heading the Strut the Hooch parade, died Monday at the age of 82.
Scott was pronounced dead at St. Francis-Emory Hospital, Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan told the Ledger-Enquirer. He had a “natural manner of death,” Bryan said in a text message.
The author was also a Vietnam veteran, musician, blogger and former president of the Auburn University Alumni Band.
Scott found his love for children’s literature by going on adventures with his kids, he previously told the Ledger-Enquirer.
Many members of the Columbus community have taken to social media to express their condolences and share memories illustrating Scott’s impact.
Author Rob St. Clair announced Scott’s death on the Columbus Artists’ Guild’s Facebook page. Scott was a former president of the guild.
“Steve was not only a visionary leader but also a cherished friend and mentor to many,” St. Clair wrote in the Facebook post. “His contributions to our community and the arts will always be remembered.”
Sweet Gum Marketing owner Monica Jones posted the last photo she took with Scott along with a message for him.
“Our Captain Steve, may you dance forever in heaven and send us a poem or two, will ya?,” Jones wrote. “Your smile will live on in all of our hearts.”
Rudy Barraca shared a video of Scott speaking as part of the Columbus Community Orchestra’s Tribute to Vietnam Veterans Concert at the National Infantry Museum. Scott shared memories of the war with attendees.
“May this former music educator, Vietnam veteran, and member of the arts community in Columbus rest in peace,” Barraca wrote.
