A Columbus native will race in the Wienie 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Columbus native Sarah Oney is among the 12 drivers of the six iconic Oscar Mayer Wienermobiles who will take the 27-foot-long vehicle for a spin on a route unlike any other.

At the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Oney, a 2019 graduate of Columbus High School, and her fellow Hotdoggers will race in a first-of-its-kind competition featuring all six Wienermobiles.

The inaugural Wienie 500 will crown the ultimate top dog. The race will be streamed live May 23, starting at 2 p.m., on the Fox Sports app and across @INDYCARonFOX social media accounts.

Highlights of the race will be included during the Fox Sports pre-race show May 25, starting at 10 a.m., before the Indianapolis 500 begins at 12:45 p.m.

Each of the Wienermobiles will be painted to represent a different regional hot dog. Oney, who graduated from the University of Georgia with a bachelor’s degree in public relations, will race in the New York Dog for the East region. The other Wienermobiles will be the Chi Dog (Midwest), Slaw Dog (Southeast), Sonoran Dog (Southwest) Chili Dog (South) and Seattle Dog (Northwest).

The Indy 500 is prime time for eating hot dogs. Oscar Mayer estimates the more than 330,000 fans expected at IMS for the race will eat nearly 30,000 hot dogs during the event.

“The Indy 500 marks the unofficial kickoff of summer and the start of hot dog season,” Kelsey Rice, brand communications director at Oscar Mayer, said in a news release. “As a brand known for sparking smiles in disarmingly delightful ways, it’s only fitting that we bring a race of epic proportions to the speedway and celebrate a timeless tradition: delicious meats and a little friendly competition to kick off a summer of wieners.”
