Columbus police prepare for two ‘No Kings’ protests downtown this weekend
The Columbus Police Department is preparing for a busy weekend in downtown, which will include two protests, CPD announced Thursday.
The news release says several major events are scheduled for this weekend, including the Miss Georgia Pageant at the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, the Military Ball at the Columbus Convention & Trade Center and Market Days on Broadway.
Police said two protests are scheduled for 9-11 a.m. Saturday.
One demonstration is scheduled for the 900 block of Broadway, organized by Columbus, GA, Indivisible and Phenix City, AL, Indivisible under the “No Kings” banner, according to police.
The No Kings website calls it a “nationwide day of defiance,” with demonstrations scheduled for Saturday throughout the country.
Police said this demonstration has expected support from ColGay Pride and people affiliated with Antifa from Florida.
The same group that organized the demonstration in the 900 block of Broadway filed a permit to demonstrate in the 1300 block of Broadway as well.
Police said they are working with local, state and federal partners to ensure a safe environment for all.
“Officers will be present throughout the Uptown area to maintain public safety, manage crowds, and safeguard the rights of those who choose to protest peacefully,” the news release says.
“We’re fully prepared for the weekend ahead,” CPD Chief Stoney Mathis said in the news release. “We welcome peaceful demonstrations and fully support the right to free speech. But we also have a responsibility to protect our community, and we will not allow violence or disorder to overshadow the events or endanger the public.”
The release warns about the use of violence and says, “In Georgia, individuals who engage in violence in an attempt to alter public policy can be charged with Domestic Terrorism, a felony punishable by 5 to 35 years in prison.”
