Will your trash get picked up on Juneteenth in Columbus? What to know
Juneteenth became an official federal holiday on June 17, 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law.
The United States Capital Historical Society describes Juneteenth as a holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.
The name is a blend of “June” and “nineteenth,” marking June 19, 1865, the day Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all enslaved people were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
As Columbus marks the holiday, residents should expect closures and service changes across several public-facing institutions.
