One man is dead after a construction accident in Columbus Wednesday, according to Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan.

Bryan said Michael Cody, 49, was working in the 7400 block of River Crest Drive when the incident happened. Cody was operating a sheep’s foot roller compactor when it flipped over and pinned Cody beneath the roll bar. The machinery is commonly used to compact soils.

Cody was pronounced dead at 6:27 a.m., Bryan said.

Bryan said an autopsy will be performed on Cody because the death was work-related. He also said Cody was a subcontractor for the Alexander Co., LLC, based in Edison, which is about an hour and 20 minutes from Columbus.
