Columbus provides cooling stations during heat wave. Locations and hours here
Amid a heat wave in the Chattahoochee Valley, Columbus recreation centers will serve as cooling stations this week, the Columbus Consolidated Government announced Monday.
The mayor’s office said the decision was made after the National Weather Service issued a heat advisory that remains in effect until 8 p.m. July 29. The NWS forecast predicts the local heat index to range from 105 to 109 degrees during that period.
“Due to the possible dangerous heat in Columbus this week, the Columbus-Muscogee County Emergency Management and Homeland Security department is partnering with Columbus Parks and Recreation and METRA to utilize the city’s recreation facilities as cooling stations for people to seek a cool place from the heat,” the news release says.
The cooling stations will be open at the following recreation centers from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.:
• 29th Street Recreation Center, 501 29th St.
• Boxwood Recreation Center, 1068 Enoch Drive
• Carver Park Recreation Center, 6665 Hunter Road
• Comer Recreation Center, 107 41st St.
• Frank Chester Recreation Facility, 1441 Benning Drive
• Michael Fluellen Recreation Center, 2824 Eighth St.
• Northside Recreation Center, 2010 American Way
• Psalmond Road Recreation Center, 6550 Psalmond Road
• Shirley Recreation Center, 5025 Steam Mill Road
• Tillis Recreation Center, 1425 13th Ave.
METRA buses will transport those seeking relief from the heat to the recreation centers through Friday evening. For more information, call the mayor’s office at 706-225-4712.
