Was anything found in Chattahoochee River when local bridge closed? Army answers
U.S. Army and Columbus police officials say they ultimately didn’t find anything in the Chattahoochee River Friday after a diver reported finding nine potential unexploded ordnance rounds.
The 789th Ordnance Company Emergency Response Team from Fort Benning showed up to the scene after the Columbus Police Department called them regarding the items, according to Walter Ham IV, deputy director of public affairs for the 20th Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear Explosives Command.
Despite a search of the river, responders couldn’t find any explosives and CPD called off the search, Ham said.
Ham said the “team is not sure what kind of unexploded ordnance the scuba diver discovered, and the diver left whatever he found in the river.”
CPD confirmed that nothing was found but said the case was still under investigation Monday.
