Which dive bar in Columbus is the best? Vote for your favorite
Defining a dive bar is a pretty elusive endeavor because it means something different to every person you ask. To help get a better grip on the very important task, I asked the internet to weigh in on the criteria of what makes a place a “dive” and there’s no real consensus.
Some folks believe it’s just the sheer existence of a keno machine and others feel like food service disqualifies a bar from being authentically dive-y. The universal components, however, are fairly simple: cheap booze and laid back vibes.
These “hole-in-the-wall,” dive bars have been around since the discovery of alcohol, probably and they come in all sorts of variations.
A new list from lifestyle magazine, Huckberry, did the work to find 50 of the best Dive Bars in the US.
Sadly, Columbus didn’t make this list, but there were a couple of spots in other Georgia cities that got the nod. But it got me thinking: What are some of Columbus’ best dive bars?.
Any bar that earns that distinction has big shoes to fill. Some of the most legendary lore took place at our beloved Sputnik and the Pop A Top (may they rest in peace) and finding a new best dive is a daunting task.
So, I’ve decided to put it to a vote. Check out these 10 candidates in round one of the and vote your favorite by Aug 25 at noon.
Ledger-Enquirer subscribers can vote as many times as you want but I caution you to take it seriously. Being crowned “Best Dive Bar” is a big responsibility and shouldn’t be gifted to the unworthy.
Dive bars in other parts
In the meantime, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can check out these favorites from the list.
Pinkie Masters
318 Drayton Street, Savannah
Pinkie Masters is one of the oldest bars in Savannah and has been called both “iconic” and “historic” in reviews. It’s cash only and, allegedly, has the cheapest PBR for miles.
Northside Tavern
1058 Howell Mill Road NW, Atlanta
In classic dive bar style, Northside Tavern has cinderblock walls and bars on the windows. Nicknamed the “good-time tavern” it was a gas station in a past life and it offers live blues every night. Okay, Columbus. It’s time to get serious about our dive bar legacy. Vote for the contestants, and if I left off your favorite spot, email me at srose@ledger-enquirer.com or find me on social media.
