A fundraiser has been established to help a Phenix City police officer who is a single father hospitalized with cancer.

According to the online account organized by Robert Isabel at GoFundMe.com, “Luke Bailey has always been the one others call when they need help.”

Bailey has been an officer in the Phenix City Police Department for four years, Phenix City Police Assistant Chief Joey Weierick told the Ledger-Enquirer Tuesday.

“He’s been a dedicated police officer with us,” Weierick said. “He’s always shown up for work, even when he’s not feeling well. Anything we can do to support him and help him is just greatly appreciated by the police department and the city.”

Bailey is a member of the department’s Special Response Team. He served four years in the U.S. Army Reserves, according to Isabel.

“Luke is also a proud single father to his 13-year-old daughter, who is the center of his world,” Isabel wrote on the GoFundMe page.

Two months after Bailey was diagnosed with cancer in April, Isabel wrote, “Luke tragically lost his father. And now, just weeks later, Luke has been hospitalized again due to complications from pneumonia, an irregular heart rate, and dangerously low blood pressure. Doctors have also discovered nodules in his lungs, adding to the seriousness of his condition.”

Bailey has progressed enough to possibly be released from the hospital this week, Weierick said, “but he still has a long road ahead of him.”

As of Tuesday morning, 143 donations have totaled $12,358 toward the $25,000 goal since the GoFundMe account began two weeks ago.

“Any donation, no matter how small, will help ease the financial burden and allow Luke to focus on healing and being there for his daughter,” Isabel wrote. “. . . Let’s rally behind Officer Bailey. He’s stood strong for all of us. Now it’s our turn to stand with him.”
