The parents of a 9-year-old girl in Russell County are offering a $3,000 reward to help identify the owners of the two pit bulls that attacked their daughter and her dogs.

Candyann and Chris Avery posted the reward offer on their Facebook page Oct. 13. Three days later, Candyann Avery created an account on GoFundMe.com to raise money to help pay for their daughter Boston’s medical bills. As of Sunday evening, 24 donors have contributed a total of $1,878 toward the $2,200 goal.

According to the GoFundMe page, the dog bites on Boston’s leg required a surgery that left her with 38 staples and three stitches — with more surgeries needed.

“I’m really nervous about how my leg looks now, and I just want it to feel and look normal again,” Boston said on the GoFundMe page. “Please help me and my family while I heal.”

Boston Avery recalls attack from pit bulls

Boston said, while she brought “my Frenchies outside,” to check her family’s mailbox, “out of nowhere, two pit bulls came running toward us and attacked my dogs.”

She tried to save them.

“I threw the white pit bull off my little Frenchie who just had puppies, and then I tried to get the brown one off my other dog,” Boston said. “But then the white pit bull turned around and attacked me. I kept fighting it to protect my dogs until it finally let go.”

“There was so much blood and even pieces of my skin on the ground,” Boston said.

Because of her next surgery, Boston said, “I can’t go to the Billie Eilish concert I was so excited for, and I might not be able to do Halloween either.

Russell County sheriff confirms pit bull attack

Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor confirmed the incident. The attack happened on the road in Crawford known as “The Lane,” he told the Ledger-Enquirer, and neither pit bull had an identification tag.

“Because nobody can find the owners (of the dogs), we haven’t signed any kind of warrants yet,” Taylor said Friday, “and nobody is admitting to ownership.”

Taylor said the white dog is the one that bit Boston.

“It came back that night, and the father killed it — shot it in the chest,” Taylor said.

Authorities picked up the other dog, brought it to the county’s animal shelter and tested it along with the remains of the white dog for rabies, Taylor said. Those results weren’t available before publication.

Taylor encourages anyone who knows the owners of those pit bulls to call the Russell County Sheriff’s Office at 334-298-6535.
