GBI investigating ‘officer involved’ shooting after 3 people found dead at Midland home
Authorities are investigating an incident that resulted in three people being found dead at a Midland home Monday night.
Harris County Coroner Joe Weldon told the Ledger-Enquirer he received a call from 911 at 7:21 p.m. that he was needed at a residence on Christopher’s Way.
“When I got there, there were three deceased,” he said, “and I did my job.”
Weldon declined to disclose any other information about the case. He referred all other questions to Harris County Sheriff Mike Jolley. The L-E didn’t reach Jolley before publication.
The HCSO requested the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s help with the case because it includes “an officer involved shooting,” GBI public affairs specialist Jade Hensel told the L-E in an email. “A news release is forthcoming.”
GBI explains incident on Christopher’s Way in Midland
Tuesday afternoon, the GBI issued a news release explaining the incident.
Around 7 p.m. Monday, HCSO deputies responded to a 911 call regarding a domestic dispute at a home in the 100 block of Christopher’s Way in Midland.
When deputies arrived, they encountered Eric Grigsby, 50, who exited from the home, pointing two guns at the deputies, according to the GBI.
“Deputies instructed Grigsby to drop the guns, but he refused to comply,” the news release says. “The deputies then shot at Grigsby, hitting him. Grigsby was pronounced dead at the scene.”
Deputies secured the home and discovered the bodies of two minors inside. Grigsby was reportedly the stepfather of the minors, according to the GBI.
“The bodies of Grigsby and the two minors will be taken to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office, where autopsies will be performed,” the news release says. “This investigation is active and ongoing.”
The GBI asks anyone with information to contact the GBI Regional Investigative Office in Columbus at 706-565-7888. Anonymous tips can also be submitted by calling 1-800-597-TIPS (8477), online at gbi.georgia.gov/submit-tips-online, or by downloading the See Something, Send Something mobile app.
“The GBI will conduct an independent investigation,” the news release says. “Once complete, the case will be given to the Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.”
The L-E asked Hensel for the cause of death for the two minors.
“Everything we can share at this time can be found in our news release,” she said.
Harris County Sheriff’s Office explains incident
A few minutes after the GBI posted its news release, the HCSO sent its version to local media.
The incident was another episode in an ongoing domestic dispute, the HCSO said.
A Harris County 911 dispatcher told the enroute deputies that the “male occupant of the residence was threatening to kill the children,” the news release says.
Grigsby also threatened officers responding to the scene, according to the HCSO.
This information came from Grigsby’s wife, who had fled to a neighbor’s house with her 5-year-old child, the HCSO said.
Deputies saw Grigbsy “walking from around the driveway with objects in both hands,” the news release says.
Grigsby ignored the deputies’ command to stop and drop what he had in his hands, according to the HCSO, and he continued to walk toward them.
By then, the deputies determined Grigsby was holding two handguns, the HCSO said, so they again commanded him to drop the weapons.
“E. Grigsby raised his hands and pointed the weapons at the deputies,” the news release says. “Deputies fired a round, striking E. Grigsby. E. Grigsby then fired rounds from the weapons in his hands, and deputies returned fire until E. Grigsby was on the ground and not moving.”
While deputies searched the rest of the property, they discovered two bodies identified as Grigsby’s stepsons, according to the HCSO.
“The 16-year-old stepson was pronounced deceased at the scene; however, the 14-year-old stepson was not pronounced deceased until after Harris County EMS attempted lifesaving techniques.”
Jolley called the incident a tragedy
“Two teenage young men were shot and killed by their stepfather, and the stepfather was shot and killed by deputies,” Jolley said in the news release. “The deputies responded to the scene and did exactly as they were trained.”
