This Columbus restaurant has the best scrambled dog, voters say

Columbus has spoken: Frank’s Alley NY Street Food is officially home to the Best Scrambled Dog in town.

After weeks of voting, thousands of clicks, and a fair amount of debate about what exactly goes on a scrambled dog, Frank’s Alley pulled ahead and claimed the title.

The win caps off a contest that proves Columbus is very serious about its hot dogs and has a lot of opinions about them.

My Frank’s Alley experience

I wouldn’t be doing my due diligence as a reporter if I didn’t thoroughly investigate my subject, so I popped into Frank’s Alley to see what all the fuss was about.

The building is narrow and tight, but it was cozy and welcoming with a ton of charm.

There are quite a few options to choose from, so I had to enlist their help for the final decision. My only “must-have” for a scrambled dog is slaw, and there were two dogs to choose from.

The Carolina and the West Virginia

The menu items were originally named after the five boroughs of New York City but have since expanded to include the whole country.

I found myself deciding between Carolina and West Virginia, but ultimately picked the West Virginia.

It’s their take on the classic West Virginia chili-slaw dog. It’s a quarter‑pound all‑beef hot dog served in a Martin’s potato roll and topped with yellow mustard, house‑made chili, coleslaw, and fresh onion.

The Frank’s Alley Vibe

It has a fun, non-fussy energy and customers could be just as comfortable standing at the stainless steel counter for a quick bite as they would be sitting down to stay a while.

There’s an old school phone booth that’s been converted to an ATM, markers to draw on the walls and a cool outdoor space that would rival any New York hot dog stand.

Not just hot dogs

Frank’s serves up more than hot dogs. You can get nachos, pretzels, pickles and cakes and cookies. I was particularly intrigued by the pretzels with jalapeños, but after I ate every bite of the West Virginia, there was no room.

It was a tight race between Columbus’ favorites

The competition was stiff and Frank eeked out ahead of local classics like Dinglewood and World Famous, but ultimately, Columbus thinks it has the scrambled dog figured out.
