What construction on this downtown Columbus street will mean to your commute
Construction to upgrade a downtown Columbus road is expected to interrupt normal traffic flow for four months, starting this month.
The Columbus Consolidated Government will begin its Eighth Street Improvements Project on Jan. 26, CCG announced Wednesday.
Portions of Eighth Street, from Front Avenue to Veterans Parkway, intermittently will be closed to thru traffic.
“Drivers are encouraged to use alternative routes if possible,” the news release says. “Additionally, rough pavement conditions should be anticipated until the project is complete.”
The estimated duration of the project is approximately 120 days.
“Cyclists and pedestrians are encouraged to proceed with caution in the construction zone,” the news release says.
CCG project engineer Brennan Hoy told the Ledger-Enquirer the improvements to Eighth Street will include:
- Installing new ramps to meet ADA requirements
- Replacing damaged sidewalks
- Installing traffic-calming measures, such as raised table-top crosswalks at First Avenue and Third Avenue and a mini roundabout at Second Avenue
- New paving and striping.
The project’s budget of $727,656.80 is funded by the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, Hoy said.
“All work will take place within existing right-of-way limits,” CCG said in a June news release. “. . . Proposed construction materials (i.e. colored concrete, pavers, etc.) will be installed to resemble the colors and patterns of existing materials in the Columbus Historic District.”
