‘Selfless in his commitment.’ Harris County baseball coach Tony Dimitri dies
Harris County High School head baseball coach Tony Dimitri has died.
Harris County School District Superintendent Justin Finney told the Ledger-Enquirer on Sunday that Harris County Sheriff Mike Jolley informed him of Dimitri’s death.
Finney declined to disclose the details, and the Ledger-Enquirer didn’t reach Jolley or Harris County Coroner Joe Weldon before publication, but WRBL reported Dimitri was killed Saturday evening in an ATV crash. It also reported the driver was arrested and charged with first-degree homicide by vehicle and driving under the influence of alcohol.
“He was selfless in his commitment to his students and his team, just a guy that loved life, loved what he did,” Finney said while describing Dimitri. “He lived and breathed coaching and has just touched hundreds and hundreds — a countless number — of lives.”
Finney said he isn’t aware of funeral arrangements or of any memorial gatherings at this time.
“We’re still communicating with the team and staff at the high school,” he said, “and we’re trying to be very considerate of the family.”
Finney added, “He’s going to be severely missed, irreplaceable. Our condolences go out to the family and the team. This is going to impact a lot of people.”
HCHS athletics director and assistant principal Jeff Wheeless told the Ledger-Enquirer in a text message Sunday evening, “We are absolutely heartbroken about Coach Dimitri. He was such a great influence on students and adults at the high school and in the community. He was not just a co-worker but a friend to so many. He will truly be missed. Please continue to keep his family, players, co-workers and friends in your thoughts and prayers.”
