Columbus road project update will affect Muscogee and Harris County drivers
The Georgia Department of Transportation has issued an update about a road-widening project on a major traffic corridor in the Columbus area.
The project along Veterans Parkway, also known as U.S. Route 27 and Georgia Route 1, stretches 7.5 miles from Turnberry Lane in Muscogee County to Georgia Route 315 in Harris County.
Contractors have scheduled a lane shift on Veterans Parkway from Hancock Road to Pierce Chapel Road, starting May 20.
“Alert signage will be posted in advance of this event to help notify drivers of the change,” GDOT said in a news release Friday. “When installed, the lane shift will move all traffic to newly constructed roadway. This will allow crews to have the necessary space to replace the remaining older lanes with roadway on a new alignment and also to construct a drainage culvert.”
The lane shift won’t require a road closure.
“The lane shift will be in place indefinitely until the work through the corridor from Hancock Road to Pierce Chapel Road is complete,” the news release says. “The speed limit through the area will also be reduced to ensure safety.”
The project started in August 2023 and is expected to be completed in the spring of 2027.
More than 1,200 vehicles travel along that corridor during commuter drive times weekday mornings and later afternoons, according to GDOT.
The project’s budget is $40 million, GDOT spokeswoman Penny Brooks told the Ledger-Enquirer, and is funded by a combination of state money and the Columbus regional Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.
