2 people die in Lee County head-on collision. Other driver taken to hospital
Two residents of Salem died Friday in a two-vehicle crash in Lee County.
At 10:47 a.m., near the intersection of Alabama 169 and Lee County 140, approximately seven miles outside of Opelika, William C. Smith Jr., 80, of Salem was fatally injured when the 2013 Nissan Maxima he was driving collided head-on with a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
Ginger Nicole Smith McConnell, 47, of Salem, who was a passenger in the Maxima, also was fatally injured as a result of the crash. Smith and McConnell were pronounced dead at the scene, ALEA said.
The driver of the Malibu was injured and transported to East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika for treatment, according to ALEA. The condition of that driver and any other details about the crash weren’t available before publication.
