Independence Day falls on a Saturday this year, so many places will be observing the holiday on Friday the third.

With both days being a federally observed holiday, you should know what is open and closed this weekend.

City services and government offices

Closed July 3:

  • Columbus Consolidated Government
  • 311 Citizens Service Center
  • Property Tax and Motor Vehicle Registration offices
  • Recorder’s Court
  • Granite Bluff and Pine Grove landfills
  • DDS/DMV locations

Open:

  • Police
  • Fire-EMS
  • 911

Libraries

Closed July 4:

  • Columbus Public Library
  • North Columbus Public Library
  • Mildred L. Terry Public Library
  • South Columbus Public Library

Trash, recycling and parks

No residential waste or recycling on July 3. Routes move to Wednesday, July 1

Closed for July 3:

  • Parks and Recreation’s administrative office
  • Recreation and senior and therapeutic facilities
  • Cooper Creek Tennis Center
  • Columbus Aquatic Center
  • Britt David Cultural Arts Studio Recreation Center

Friday, July 3, runs on a Saturday bus schedule; there’s no bus service Saturday, July 4

Banks and post offices

  • Post offices are open and mail runs normally Friday but are closed Saturday
  • Many national banks will run on modified operating hours on July 3, so check with your individual institution.

Stores and retailers

Most major retailers and box stores will operate normal hours on both July 3 and 4.
