Dances, music and football lined up for 80th Annual Tuskegee-Morehouse Classic
There will be two dances this year at the Columbus Convention & Trade Center on Oct. 9 -- the Friday night before the Tuskegee-Morehouse Classic.
The official classic dance, presented in conjunction with iHeartRadio and featuring local radio personality DJ Chip, will begin at 11 p.m.
Beginning two hours earlier will be the Old School New School Party, sponsored by Davis Broadcasting Inc. and featuring rapper Chubb Rock.
Classic executive director Douglas Troutman called it "unfortunate" that there will be two dances and is concerned about a lack of attendance.
Davis Broadcasting business manager Geniece Granville said this is the third year Davis is sponsoring its party and the company hopes the Classic, celebrating its 80th year, will be a success.
Past Classic executive director Dr. Howard Willis said any event bringing money into the local economy is good. Troutman and Willis both emphasized that money raised at all sanctioned classic events goes toward aiding students.
And there are plenty of events.
The biggest, of course, is the football game between longtime rivals Tuskegee University and Morehouse College to be played Oct. 10 in A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium.
Willis said that as many as 150 vendors will be outside the stadium.
Before the game will be the parade downtown featuring both school bands and some floats.
After the game, a concert featuring major recording
artist rapper 2 Chainz will be held at the Columbus Civic Center. Also performing will be rappers Cash Out, Dej Loaf and Young Dro.
On Friday night at the Columbus Civic Center will be the "Best of the Best Step Show," featuring fraternity and sorority step teams from the schools, as well as some high school step teams. They will be competing for cash. Both college bands, as well as rap recording artist Cool Amerika, will perform.
Other events on Friday include a golf tournament during the day at Bull Creek Golf Course and an evening old school concert at the Phenix City Amphitheatre featuring Howard Hewett and the SOS Band.
