Art gallery's anniversary display to depict lives well-traveled
See the world and never leave town.
That's the experience Gallery on 10th is offering Sunday.
Thirty award-winning regional artists will be displaying work depicting what they have seen in their many travels.
Food items associated with different countries will be served as refreshments.
The event is called "Around the World with 30 Artists."
It is from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., and it is free at the art gallery located at no. 9 10th St. in Columbus.
The event is co-sponsored by Travels by Donna, and owner Donna Comer will be on hand to discuss travel.
The art gallery is celebrating its second year at its current location.
One of the founding members, Geri Davis, said the gallery was known for 14 years as the Joseph House Art Gallery and was located in the historic district.
The gallery lost its lease and moved into its present spot, an 800-square-foot space it rents from Columbus State University.
"This has proved to be a better location," said gallery president Rob St. Clair.
"We get students coming by, and market days on Saturday bring people here."
He and Davis agreed there were many people who did not know the gallery existed in its prior location.
The gallery is regularly open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
It is a co-op, with the 30 artist members sharing ownership.
Davis said there is a waiting list of artists who would like to join.
Only an artist who delivers a certain quality of work has a chance for membership. She said the artists take great pride in the way the art is showcased in the gallery.
"We have artists who have won national competitions and have art in prestigious galleries," Davis said.
She said the primary mission of the gallery is to promote regional artists and educate people about art.
"We hold workshops and give lectures," she said.
Not all of the art is the same.
The artists work in watercolor, oil, acrylic, collage, pastel, pottery, porcelain and fine furniture making.
St. Clair and gallery chairman Lee Brantley both are photographers.
St. Clair has already put up works for the show, with photographs from places such as Peru and Israel.
Davis said the gallery also is working on something special for Christmas.
