One killed, one injured Sunday in single-vehicle Columbus wreck

One person was killed and another was injured Sunday night in a single-vehicle wreck at the intersection of Susan Lane and Huffman Drive, according to Columbus police.

Cord Coverson of Hamilton, the 29-year-old driver, was pronounced dead of blunt force trauma to the head at Columbus Midtown Medical Center, Muscogee County Deputy Coroner Charles Newton said. His body will not undergo an autopsy, officials added.

The passenger in the 7:45 p.m. wreck was transported was to the hospital to be treated for injuries that were not life threatening, police said.

Authorities said Coverson was "negotiating a curve" northwest on Susan Lane approximately 89 feet from east of Armenda Drive when his 2001 Chevrolet S-10 left the roadway. The vehicle entered the grassy area at the intersection of Armenda Drive and Susan Lane, where it began rotating clockwise, police stated.

Officials said the Chevrolet S-10 continued rotating clockwise across Armenda Drive, where it entered another grassy area on the west side of Armenda Drive. The truck then continued northwest across the grassy area, where it crossed Susan Lane and continued towards Huffman Drive, according to police.

Authorities said the truck then struck the curb at the intersection of Susan Lane and Huffman Drive, where the left front/rear tires caught the curb. The impact caused the vehicle to flip one time on the driver's side, where it landed upright at its final rest, according to the report.

Police said the vehicle, which had extensive damage, was towed away from the scene.
