Phenix City Fire Chief Kristin Kennedy said no one was injured in Wednesday night's house fire located in the 1400 block of 20th Avenue.

Officials are still working to determine the cause of the fire, which was reported to them around 10:58 p.m. that night. Kennedy said it appears that a vagrant may have entered the abandoned home and unintentionally caused the incident while trying to keep warm.

"That's something that we see periodically in the winter time with vacant structure fires," Kennedy said. "So at this time, there doesn't appear to be anything as far as an accidental cause with utilities as the cause of the fire."

Officials confirmed that the blaze, which destroyed the 20th Avenue building about 160 feet away from Mike & Ed's BBQ, didn't spread to other structures.

A portion of Crawford Road was temporarily blocked so firefighters could establish water supply, but the roadway has since been reopened.
