School board to vote on budget director Tuesday

The Muscogee County School Board is expected to vote on a senior director of budget at its meeting Tuesday  night.

The meeting is at 6 p.m. in the Muscogee County Public Education Center on Macon Road.

Superintendent David Lewis has recommended Michi Billings for the position. Billings is currently a budget analyst with the Fulton County Board of Education in Georgia.

At a board session on Jan. 11, District 8 representative Frank Myers, whose 2014 campaign called for more accountability and transparency in the school system, asked whether board members could meet Billings before the vote.

Lewis denied that request saying it was the function of the superintendent  to make recommendations and select personnel and that the board members can look at the resume and vote to approve or not approve the recommendation based on the information presented.

The board will take action on a recommendation by Lewis to approve the purchase of 9.23 acres of land from Columbus Sky, LLC located at 4100 Cusseta Road for the price of $525,000. This acreage will be added to the construction project for the new Spencer.

Board approval is being requested for a purchase order of $49,469.20 to Pound Construction Company for the installation of noise reduction ceiling tiles and wall panels in the cafeteria and gym at South Columbus Elementary School.

The board is being asked to approve $16,000 to deBest Plumbing for emergency repairs and insulation to water lines at Eddy Middle School.
