Calendar, school uniforms on school board agenda

Uniforms for Baker Middle School students and the naming of the Columbus High School auditorium after Morton A. Harris are two items the Muscogee County School Board will discuss at a work session Monday night.

The work session will begin at 5 p.m. in the Muscogee County Public Education Center on Macon Road.

Perhaps, the item agenda with the most interest will be a discussion of a calendar for the 2016-2017 school year.

The school district surveyed 3,000 employees about the calendar. The results should be announced Monday as well as the recommendation by superintendent David Lewis.

In a calendar proposed by Lewis in March, the Thanksgiving break was shortened from a week to three days.

Baker Middle School is requesting the change to school uniforms. A survey was taken and 100 percent of the 44 faculty members surveyed were in favor of uniforms and of 134 responses received from parents, 85 percent were in favor of uniforms.

It is the board of trustees of the Columbus High School Alumni Association Inc. that is asking board permission to honor Harris, a 1952 graduate of the school.

Harris , an attorney and civic leader, died in August. Harris served 10 years on the Muscogee County School Board.

In other business:

Lewis is recommending James Howard Odom Jr. for director of the Division of Plant Services. Since 2011, the Auburn University graduate has served as project manager for the Muscogee County School District which makes him responsible for projects with budgets greater than $1 million.

For the position of director of Advance Learning and Gifted Programs, Lewis is nominating Christine Hull, currently assistant principal at Northside High School.

Hull, was named Muscogee County teacher of the year in 2009.

She is a former valedictorian at Hardaway High School and has degrees from Georgia Southern University and Columbus State University.

Though no names are presented in the agenda, the board will discuss the principal jobs at Arnold Magnet Academy, Jordan High School, Shaw High School and Lonnie Jackson Magnet Academy.

The board will receive reports from Chattahoochee Valley Libraries and the Columbus Museum.
