Man dies after being struck by vehicle on U.S. Highway 80
A 68-year-old man died after being struck by a vehicle Tuesday night on U.S. Highway 80 near Riverchase Drive, the Phenix City Police Department said.
The pedestrian was transported to Midtown Medical Center in Columbus by ambulance for injuries sustained in the crash. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival to the hospital. The driver was not injured.
A release said the victim’s name would be released once the Russell County Coroner’s Office notified next of kin.
Phenix City police responded to the scene around 8:27 p.m. Tuesday and spoke to witnesses.
A preliminary investigation indicated that a Toyota Avalon was traveling eastbound on U.S. Highway 80 when the pedestrian stepped into traffic. The driver maneuvered in an attempt to avoid the pedestrian but struck the man.
The crash is under investigation by the Phenix City Police Department.
