Semi-truck with hazardous material overturns on Macon Road

A semi-truck carrying hazardous material overturned early Thursday on Macon Road, according to Columbus police.

The one-vehicle wreck caused the material to spill onto the roadway, but no serious injuries were reported, authorities confirmed.

Police Sgt. Art Sheldon said westbound traffic heading into Columbus was blocked off as workers cleaned up, but the lane reopened around noon. A detour has been setup along Pope Road.

Officials said they were called at 12:49 a.m. Thursday to the scene of the wreck, where they spoke with the driver of the 2009 Freightliner Conventional and a witness.

The driver said he was traveling west on Macon Road when a deer ran in front of his truck. He said he swerved to avoid the animal but lost control of the truck. The vehicle veered off to the shoulder of the roadway, flipped and slid down the road.

A witness gave the same account of the incident, according to police.

Authorities said the victim complained of chest pain but wasn’t transported to a hospital for treatment.
