Sheriff says deputy in fair condition after being shot in head

Harris County Sheriff Mike Jolley said deputy Jamie White, shot above the left eye, is in fair condition following surgery at Midtown Medical Center in Columbus. White had stopped a vehicle for speeding near the 30-mile marker of I-185. Joe Garrett, 24, turned himself in to police in Phenix City. Jolley said that in his 24 years in office this is the first Harris County officer to be shot in the line of duty.

Inquirer Mike Owen answered a big question from area motorists: Do left turners downtown have to stop at the red light that’s intended for the east-west traffic? The city’s public safety director, Mayor Teresa Tomlinson, says to proceed with caution and yield to oncoming traffic, of course, but the red light is not intended for you.

Janice Wendell Bethany, the daughter of a beloved pastor at North Highland Assembly of God Church, became Jan Crouch, the televangelist who co-founded the largest Christian TV network in the world and was CEO of the Holy Land Experience. She died Tuesday, three years after the passing of her husband. She was 78.

Mother, 22, accused of abandoning two kids at Wilson Homes

Porshia Seanta Hollis, a 22-year-old mother accused of leaving her two children alone at her “cluttered” Eighth Avenue home for nearly four hours early Monday pleaded not guilty to two counts of second-degree child cruelty. She was placed in the Muscogee County Jail under bonds totaling $100,000.

‘Beer Boys’ in right place at the right time

The “Beer Boys,” as Chuck Williams calls three young entrepreneurs, have opened a gastropub on the west side of the 1200 block of Broadway, an area that is about to see a significant upgrade as Columbus State University completes its College of Education and Health Sciences building at the corner of 12th Street and Broadway.
