Phenix City man killed in two-vehicle wreck involving 18-wheeler

A Phenix City man died early Friday after the vehicle he was driving crashed into an 18-wheeler on U.S. Highway 80, Russell County Coroner Arthur Sumbry Jr. said.

Carl Gause IV, 35, was pronounced dead of blunt-force trauma at 9:41 a.m. at Midtown Medical Center in Columbus, the coroner said. His body will not undergo an autopsy, but a toxicology test will be administered.

Sumbry said Gause ran a stop sign at the intersection of Womack Road and U.S. Highway 80 before crashing into an 18-wheeler around 7 a.m. He was the only individual in the vehicle at the time.

It’s unclear whether the driver of the truck was harmed.

“Speed was a factor, and we’re doing a blood toxicology test to determine whether alcohol was involved or not,” Sumbry said.
