Around Town: Youth Orchestra awarded grant, Jack Hughston Hospital Job Fair, Georgia one of the least in high energy costs

Surviving the Unthinkable

In an effort to relieve the anxiety and worry caused by all the recent headlines, the Business Resource Center of the Pastoral Institute has developed a workshop titled “Surviving the Unthinkable.” It is based on research from police and sheriff’s departments throughout the U.S. and includes the most recent training video funded by the Department of Homeland Security. There will be an additional 30 minutes Q&A after the workshop.

The workshops will be held 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday July 26 and Thursday July 28 at the Community Room at the Pastoral Institute, 1515 20th St. Cost is $15 per person or $10 per person for groups of five or more registering at the same time. Registation is required two days prior to each event. There is limited seating. The workshop is not recommended for children under 14. YOGC Awarded Arts Grant

The Youth Orchestra of Greater Columbus (YOGC) has been awarded a $7,000 grant from the Georgia Council for the Arts (GCA) for the 2017 Summer String Camp. This is an increase from past several grants. GCA’s guidelines emphasized YOGC’s community impact and the grant review panel awarded YOGC high scores for the services that are provided to the people of Georgia.

Phenix City to host Alabama Water and Pollution Control

Phenix City will be the host city for the annual Alabama Water and Pollution Control Association’s (AWPCA) Short Course School and Conference July 24-26. The conference will be held at the city’s new Courtyard Marriott and Troy University-Phenix City’s riverfront campus. Since 2000, the AWPCA has limited its conferences to the state’s largest cities-Montgomery, Mobile, Birmingham, Huntsville and Florence. Phenix City wants to showcase the new Phenix City and its development along the Chattahoochee. Donations, gift cards, sponsorships and volunteers are needed. Jack Hughston Job Fair

The Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital will hold a Job Fair, 6-9 p.m., July 21 at the hospital, 4401 River Chase Dr., Phenix City. Guaranteed interview and sign-on bonus available. For more information or to see a complete list of open positions, go to www.hughston.com.

Georgia One of the Least Energy-Inexpensive States

The personal-website WalletHub conducted an in-depth analysis of 2016’s Most and Least Energy-Expensive States. Compared were the total monthly energy bills in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The ranking used a special formula that accounts for the following residential energy types: electricity, natural gas, motor fuel and home heating oil. Georgia came in 4th in the Overall Rank and Alabama ranked 11th. Connecticut was best overall with Washington coming in last. Smart Driver Class

The Gallops Senior Center is hosting a “Smart Driver Class” 9 a.m.-4 p.m., July 21. This is a six-hour class and there is no test. Cost of materials is $15 for AARP Members and $20 if you are not an AARP Member. Volunteer AARP instructors teach the class. Lunch is optional-you can purchase it from the center or bring your own. Bring your AARP membership card, driver’s license, lunch/snacks and a pen. To register call 706-653-4193.
