Around Town: Beekeepers meeting, Liberty Theatre’s “Shonuff Broadway,” Department of Transportation Survey
Beekeepers Association to meet
The honey is harvested. Summer will be followed by fall and winter. What should a beekeeper do during the months between now and spring? Nicholas Weaver, supervisor of the University of Georgia Honey Bee Programs, will tell beekeepers of the Chattahoochee Valley Beekeepers Association, what he recommends they do during the off-season. The meeting will be at 6 p.m. August 8 at Oxbow Meadows Learning Center. There is no fee to attend.
Weaver is a rising star among beekeepers. He gained attention in the media in 2011 when he encouraged the Forsythe County, Ga. Board of Commissioners to allow residential homeowners to keep honey bees. The original proposal to prohibit residential beekeeping was in response to a code enforcement complaint. Nicholas, along with other beekeepers in the area, won and are free to keep bees within any restrictions. To learn more visit chattahoocheebeekeepers.com.
Social Security increases your privacy
Starting this month, Social Security has added a new step to protect your privacy as a “my Social Security” user. This new requirement is the result of an executive order for federal agencies to provide more secure authentication for their online services. Any agency that provides online access to a customer’s personal information must use multi-factor authentication. When you sign in at ssa.gov/myaccount with your username and password, you will be asked to add your text-enabled cell phone number. Each time you log in to your account with your username and password, users will be sent a one-time security code you must also enter to log in successfully to your account.
The process of using a one-time security code in addition to username and password is one form of “multifactor authentication,” which means more than one method is used to make sure you are the actual owner of your account. If you do not have a text-enabled cell phone or you do not wish to provide your cell phone number, you will not be able to access your “my Social Security” account. If you are unable or chose not to use the account, there are other options available to you. Go to https://www.ssa.gov/ or call the local Columbus office at 706-649-7823.
DOT taking survey on safety for people who walk
