A 51-year-old man wanted on a murder warrant in a Labor Day barbecue killing turned himself in to Columbus police Monday night.

Merrick Emory Redding is scheduled to appear in Columbus Recorder’s Court on Tuesday at 9 a.m.

Redding is accused of striking Joseph Davis, a janitor at Northside High School, unconscious at a Labor Day barbecue on Bond Avenue.

Davis, 47, was taken to Midtown Medical Center and later airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta where he was treated for intercranial bleeding. He died the next morning.

Officials say Davis was leaning against a pickup truck when he was struck in the head and fell to the ground.
