Columbus man dies seven months after being shot in Fort Mitchell

A Columbus man died Thursday, almost seven months after he was shot in the back during a home invasion in Fort Mitchell, Ala., authorities said.

Reginald Harris, 43, died of multiple organ failure at 5:09 p.m. at Midtown Medical Center in Columbus, said Russell County Coroner Arthur Sumbry. The family is performing a private autopsy on Harris to determine the cause of death.

Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan said his office was first contacted about the death when he learned the shooting occurred Feb. 26 during a home invasion in Fort Mitchell.

Harris was treated at the hospital after the shooting. He was in surgery on March 1 to remove the bullet that was fired from a 9 mm pistol.

Sumbry referred questions on the shooting to the Russell County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Heath Taylor couldn’t be reached for comment Friday afternoon.
