One dead, one injured in crash on U.S. 280-431 North

A one-vehicle crash Wednesday morning on U.S. Highway 280-431 North in Smiths Station, Ala., has left one man dead and another seriously injured, authorities said.

The name of the victim has not been released because his family hasn’t been notified, said Lee County Coroner Bill Harris. The passenger in the vehicle was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at Midtown Medical Center in Columbus.

Harris said the driver of the vehicle was taken to the Columbus hospital where he was treated for serious injuries.

Authorities said the eastbound vehicle was about a mile west of the flea market when it ran off the road and struck a utility pole. The impact hurled the driver from the vehicle and trapped the passenger inside the wreckage. It took rescue personnel about an hour to free the man from the vehicle and transport him to the hospital.

More details on the passenger will be available after relatives are notified, the coroner said.
