The Special Victims Unit of the Columbus Police Department is looking for a person of interest in connection with a Tuesday night report about a man in a SUV trying to kidnap a child at a residence near Hill Street and Owsley Avenue.
The incident occurred between 2 p.m. Monday and 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Late Wednesday, police were seeking the public’s help in locating a fat, white male with blond hair and freckles in his face in the possible attempted kidnapping. He was described as driving a white van with no windows and a side door. Anyone with information on the suspect or the vehicle should contact 911 or Detective Sherman Hayes at 706-653-3449.
The latest report differs from a description of a black male although it came from the victim. Earlier, Police Lt. Joyce Dent-Fitzpatrick said the suspect was described as a chubby black man about 5 feet, 8 inches tall in a silver or gray SUV, possibly a Nissan Xterra or Kia Sportage. He has a beard and blue eyes, authorities said.
He last seen in a black hat with “Chicago Bull” written in red on the front of the hat, according to a police report. No additional information was given.
Fitzpatrick told the Ledger-Enqurier Wednesday afternoon that the Special Victims Unit is still in the beginning stages of its investigation. It’s unclear at this time if the incident is connected with the attempted kidnapping reported early Monday at Bull Creek Apartments near Woodruff Farm Road.
