A Columbus man was arrested early Monday after he allegedly broke into an apartment and kidnapped a 1-year-old girl from her mother’s arms, authorities said.
Daniel Brooks, 29, faces one count each of kidnapping, burglary and simple battery. He was placed in the Muscogee County Jail, where he awaits a 8 a.m. Tuesday hearing in Columbus Recorder’s Court.
Columbus police were called to an apartment in the 3200 block of Grapevine Trail around 12:14 a.m. to investigate a domestic dispute.
Brooks was accused of kicking in the victim’s front door. He allegedly shoved her off of her bed and took her 1-year-old daughter out of her arms. He tried to leave the apartment with the child, authorities said.
In the report, there was no mention of the child being harmed.
Brooks, who doesn’t live with the woman or have custody of the child, was arrested at the scene at 4:40 a.m. No further information concerning the incident has been released.
Georgia law states that a person is guilty of kidnapping when that person abducts or steals away another person without lawful authority or warrant and holds such other person against his or her will. There shall be movement for the offense of kidnapping to occur, although slight movement is sufficient.
