GBI investigating officer involved fatal shooting
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate an officer involved shooting in which a man died.
According to an official GBI report, the incident occurred Monday.
The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office requested help from the GBI.
The GBI says preliminary information found that at 11:21 a.m., a 911 call was made from a female complainant who said while walking on Grandview Road in Jasper County, she was approached by a male who pointed a firearm at her.
The report says Jasper County Deputies responded and while investigating the complaint they heard multiple gunshots coming from a residence in the 600 block of Grandview Road. At the house, deputies made contact with a male, 46-year-old man Jeffrey Scott Cantrell.
Cantrell made statements to the officers that they would have to kill him. During the incident, gunfire was exchanged between Cantrell and the deputies. Cantrell died at the scene. No officers were injured.
The report says further investigation found that prior to the incident, Cantrell had contacted a family member and talked about committing suicide.
An autopsy will be performed at the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur.
When completed, the case will be turned over to the Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
